Shaving cream vs clear shaving gel: which should you choose?

by Budget Salon Supplies 24 Oct 2026

A traditional brush-and-lather shave and a clear-gel shave ask different things of your morning routine. The useful question is whether you want to build a creamy lather or keep the area you are shaving easy to see.

Here is how two products in our range differ, what their application directions involve, and what to check before choosing one.

The quick choice: lather or visibility?

  • Choose a lathering cream if you enjoy using a shaving brush and want visible, creamy coverage over the area you plan to shave.
  • Consider a transparent shaving gel if seeing the hair and the edge of your beard while shaving matters more to you.
  • Check the individual formula. “Cream” and “gel” are broad labels. Some gels foam up; the Elegance product discussed here is designed to stay clear.

Neither format guarantees a closer or irritation-free shave. Your skin, razor and technique still matter, so choose a product that suits the routine you can use comfortably.

For a brush-built lather: Wahl Traditional Barbers Shave Cream

Wahl Traditional Barbers Shave Cream 200g is a lathering cream containing coconut oil. It suits someone who wants the brush step to be part of their shave, rather than a product they simply spread straight from the container.

How the cream is applied

Wahl's application directions are to moisten the shaving brush, work the cream into a lather on its bristles, then apply it in circular movements to skin wetted with warm water. Cover the area you intend to shave.

The practical trade-off is the extra brush step. If you do not own a shaving brush or do not want to use one, consider that before adding this cream to your kit.

For a clear view: Elegance Shaving Gel

Elegance Shaving Gel 500ml provides transparent coverage, letting you see the area beneath it. That makes it worth considering when you want to keep track of a beard outline rather than hide it under white lather.

How the gel is applied

Elegance directs you to wet the skin first, put a small amount on your fingertips or the area being shaved, and gently spread it over the wet skin. Shave, then rinse it away. A shaving brush is not part of those directions.

You do not need to keep adding gel to make it look like shaving foam. The clear finish is the point of this formula. It is fragranced, so check the ingredient label if fragrance is something you avoid.

Keep the shave comfortable with either format

For general shaving technique, the American Academy of Dermatology's shaving guidance recommends wetting the skin and hair first, shaving in the direction of hair growth and rinsing the razor after each stroke. Let the razor dry between uses.

If your skin is very dry or sensitive, the same guidance recommends looking for a shaving cream labelled for sensitive skin. A clear appearance or rich lather alone does not tell you whether a formula will suit you.

Quick questions before you choose

Do I need a brush for every shaving cream?

Check the directions rather than assuming. Wahl specifies a moistened brush for this cream. The Elegance gel above uses direct application instead.

Is clear shaving gel the same as aftershave gel?

No. Check the product name and directions: shaving gel is used during the shave, while an aftershave product is used afterwards. Similar-looking bottles can have different jobs.

Should I compare the products by size alone?

Use size as one part of the decision, alongside application method and how often you shave. These products are labelled in different units, and the amount used per shave is not established here, so a larger number on the pack does not prove a lower cost per shave.

Start with the format you want to use: Wahl's brush-lather cream or Elegance's clear shaving gel. Read the current pack directions before your first use.
