When to use cuticle oil: before or after nail polish?

by Budget Salon Supplies 25 Oct 2026

For a regular nail-polish manicure, save cuticle oil until your polish has dried. If you use oil or cream during preparation, remove the residue from the nail surface before painting. Keeping those two steps separate lets you care for the skin around your nails without leaving an oily layer beneath your colour.

Before polish: keep the nail surface free of oil

Finish any oily or creamy preparation before the final nail-cleaning step. Follow your polish system’s preparation instructions, then apply base coat and colour to clean, dry nails. If you have just applied oil, clean away the residue rather than painting over it.

After polish: wait for it to dry

Finish your regular polish and top coat first, then allow them to dry according to their instructions before applying cuticle oil gently. There is no single waiting time that suits every polish, coat thickness and drying product.

  • Keep the application small and targeted around the cuticle area.
  • Avoid rubbing across a freshly painted nail while the polish is still soft.
  • Do not use cuticle oil as a substitute for the drying time your polish needs.

This guide covers ordinary air-drying nail polish. Gel polish has a different curing process: follow that system’s instructions rather than using an air-drying timetable.

Using Natural Look Nourish Cuticle & Nail Oil

Natural Look Nourish Cuticle & Nail Oil 15ml is an option for this step. The manufacturer gives separate directions for bare nails and post-manicure application:

  • On bare nails: remove polish, wash and thoroughly dry your hands, then apply to the cuticle and nearby skin. Gently massage it in until absorbed.
  • After a polished manicure or pedicure: use a small amount on the skin above the cuticle and let it absorb. For regular polish, wait until the polish has dried first.

Check the current bottle’s directions and ingredients before use, especially if you have known ingredient sensitivities.

Where does cuticle cream fit?

If you prefer a cream, Natural Look Cuticle Therapy Cream 50g is designed to soften and moisturise the nail and cuticle area. Its directions call for a small amount massaged gently into cuticles until absorbed, used daily.

You do not need to layer both products to create a complicated routine. Choose the format you find convenient, and keep either one separate from your final pre-polish cleaning step.

Quick questions

Do I have to remove my polish every time I use oil?

No. Natural Look provides a post-polish option for the surrounding skin as well as directions for bare nails. Follow the appropriate instructions rather than removing a finished manicure just to use oil.

Should I trim my cuticles first?

No. Moisturising does not require cutting cuticles. The American Academy of Dermatology advises against cutting or forcefully pushing them back. If the area is sore, inflamed or reacting to a product, stop experimenting with manicure treatments and seek advice from a qualified health professional.

The simple order: prepare and clean, paint, let regular polish dry, then apply cuticle care gently around the nail.
