Choosing a rectangular hair towel for home

by Budget Salon Supplies 30 Oct 2026

A hair towel does not have to be a shaped wrap. If you prefer a simple rectangle that you can fold around your lengths or lay across your shoulders, a salon towel can be a useful option for home. The important checks are its actual measurements, fabric, pack size and care label.

Start with the shape you actually want

Before looking at fabric claims, decide how you will use the towel. A flat rectangle gives you flexibility to fold it, drape it or hold it around a section of hair. It does not have the fastening arrangement of a purpose-made wrap, so do not expect it to stay in place in the same way while you move around.

If your main job is catching drips while you get ready, you may want a different size from someone trying to contain very long hair. Think about the task first, rather than choosing the biggest or thickest towel available.

Measure before ordering

The Salon Smart Premium Salon Towel in our range measures 40.6cm × 68.6cm. It is a compact salon towel, so check that footprint against your hair length and the way you like to hold or fold a towel.

A useful at-home check is to lay out a towel you already own and mark those measurements with a tape measure. This will not tell you how absorbent a new towel feels, but it will show whether you are picturing the right amount of fabric. For long or dense hair, pay particular attention to whether the ends will fit comfortably without pulling the towel tight.

Read the fabric description, not just “salon”

Salon Smart specifies 100% pre-shrunk cotton for this towel. It is black, vat dyed and has double-stitched hems. These are practical construction details to compare when shopping; the word “salon” on its own does not tell you the material or dimensions.

The product is described as stain resistant. Treat that as a product feature, not permission to ignore its washing instructions or assume every spill will disappear. Likewise, pre-shrunk does not replace the care label.

Buy for your laundry routine

A single towel is a sensible starting point if you want to check the size and feel before buying more. Think about how often you wash your hair, whether someone else in the household needs their own towel, and how much drying space you have. A large pack is only useful if you will use and store it.

Keep the care label and follow its washing and drying settings. Different towel fabrics can have different requirements, so avoid copying a laundry routine from an unrelated product. After use, open the towel out so it can dry rather than leaving it bundled in a bathroom corner.

Use a light touch

Whichever towel you choose, avoid scrubbing your hair back and forth. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends wrapping hair in a towel to absorb water rather than rubbing it dry. Keep the towel comfortable instead of twisting it tightly against your scalp.

You do not need to chase a promised number of minutes. Check the moisture left in your hair and follow the directions for whichever leave-in product or styling tool comes next.

Your quick buying checklist

  • Format: do you want a plain rectangle?
  • Fit: have you checked the width and length, including room for your ends?
  • Fabric: is the material clearly specified?
  • Quantity: will you use the pack size you are buying?
  • Care: can you follow the label and dry it properly between uses?

Those checks are more useful than choosing on a “fast drying” promise alone. Start with a towel that fits your everyday wash routine, then decide whether you need extras.
