Haircare after swimming: when to use a clarifying shampoo

by Budget Salon Supplies 15 Oct 2026

A swim should not mean a complicated hair routine. The useful starting point is simple: rinse with fresh water before and after the pool, then choose your wash products according to how your hair feels and what their labels actually say.

With Australian spring underway, this is a practical time to organise your swim bag. That is a seasonal reason to revisit your routine, rather than a claim that a particular shampoo is suddenly trending.

Before you swim: start with fresh water

Give your hair a thorough rinse before entering the pool. Wetting it with tap water helps limit how much pool water it absorbs. A well-fitting swim cap can also reduce exposure, although it does not make your hair completely waterproof. These are practical precautions recommended in Cleveland Clinic's swimming-hair advice.

If you are considering a pre-swim leave-in product, check your pool's rules first. Do not assume any conditioner on the bathroom shelf is designed as a swimming protectant.

After the pool: rinse first, then wash and condition

Rinse your hair promptly instead of letting pool water dry in it while you travel home. Follow with a shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair. Australian dermatologist advice reported by ABC on 15 February 2026 highlights freshwater rinsing before and after swimming, plus moisturising wash care afterwards.

It helps to separate two jobs when choosing products:

  • Cleansing: washing your scalp and hair and addressing residue.
  • Conditioning: caring for the feel and manageability of the lengths after washing.

A stronger cleanse is not a substitute for conditioner. Equally, adding more conditioner is not the same as washing residue away.

Where does a clarifying shampoo fit?

If you swim regularly, an occasional clarifying wash may be useful. It should not automatically become your everyday shampoo: Cleveland Clinic cautions that daily clarifying can be drying. Use the instructions on your particular bottle and adjust with your hairdresser if your hair is coloured, fragile or chemically treated.

One option in our retail range is NAK Signature Ultimate Cleanse Shampoo 350ml. NAK describes this as a purifying shampoo for removing chlorine and product build-up, as well as oil and styling residue. That makes its stated purpose relevant to pool-day cleansing, rather than choosing a product simply because the bottle says “fresh” or “clean”.

How to use NAK Ultimate Cleanse

NAK's directions are to work the shampoo gently into wet hair, lather and rinse thoroughly, repeating for optimum cleansing. Follow the directions on your own pack if they differ. There is no need to invent an extra-long leave-on time or treat it like a mask.

Three questions worth asking before buying

Do I need a clarifying shampoo after every swim?

Not as a blanket rule. Consider how often you swim, your usual wash routine and whether your hair is becoming dry. Keep your regular wash products in the picture rather than replacing everything at once.

What if my blonde hair looks green?

Pool-related green tones can involve copper and other minerals; it is not simply chlorine colouring the hair green. ABC's dermatologist explanation makes that distinction. Ask a hairdresser to assess persistent discolouration rather than repeatedly washing or improvising a colour correction.

Can I use this routine after a salon smoothing service?

Ask the salon that performed the service before adding a clarifying product. Take the exact product name with you so they can check it against your treatment's aftercare instructions.

A small swim-bag checklist

Pack the shampoo you have chosen, your usual conditioner and a towel, and make time for the rinse before leaving. Keep products in their labelled containers, particularly if you alternate between an everyday shampoo and an occasional deeper cleanse.

For a straightforward starting point, view NAK Signature Ultimate Cleanse 350ml and compare its purpose with the products already in your routine. You do not need to buy a whole new line to make your pool-day habits more consistent.
