Nail file grit explained: choosing a file for natural nails

by Budget Salon Supplies 19 Oct 2026

A nail file can look like a very simple purchase until you see numbers such as 100, 180 and 240. Those numbers matter more than the colour of the board. They describe its grit, which helps you work out whether it belongs in your natural-nail routine or an enhancement service.

This guide focuses on choosing a hand file for everyday fingernail shaping, rather than removing acrylics or gel.

What does nail file grit mean?

With abrasive nail files, a lower grit number means a coarser surface; a higher number means a finer surface. A 100-grit file is therefore more abrasive than a 240-grit file. A larger number does not mean a stronger file.

  • 80–100 grit: coarse options associated with working on artificial nail products. They are not a sensible default for a natural-nail touch-up.
  • 180 grit: commonly used to shape and refine enhancements. Do not assume it is suitable for every natural nail.
  • 240 grit: a useful fine-grit reference point for natural-nail shaping. OPI's professional preparation instructions specify a 240-grit hand file for shaping.

Always check the intended use on the individual file's packaging. Grit is a starting point, not permission to use heavy pressure.

Choose for the job, not just the number

Before buying, ask yourself: am I shortening the free edge, tidying a small snag, or preparing an enhancement? The free edge is the part of the nail that extends beyond the fingertip. Shaping that edge is a different task from working across the nail's top surface.

If you only want a tidy edge, you do not need to add a surface-buffing step just because a kit includes a buffer. Likewise, a coarse file intended for artificial product is not an upgrade for an ordinary manicure.

A fine file in our range

The Flowery Sandfoam Fine File Spn is listed as a strong, flexible fine file for shaping and finishing nails. Its product description recommends filing in one direction.

The listing does not specify a numerical grit, so we have not labelled it as 240 grit. If you need an exact grit for a particular service, check the pack or confirm it with us before ordering. “Fine” is useful product information, but it is not a substitute for a missing number.

Keep an everyday touch-up gentle

Start with clean, dry hands. Use light, controlled strokes in one direction along the edge, then pause to check the shape. You can always remove a little more; you cannot put length back. Keep the file away from the surrounding skin, and stop if filing feels uncomfortable.

For a small snag, focus on that spot rather than repeatedly reshaping every nail. For an unfamiliar enhancement system, follow its manufacturer's instructions or have a nail professional handle the service.

Quick questions before you add a file to your kit

Can I tell the grit by the colour?

Use the label or product specification. A black, pink or white surface alone does not establish the grit or intended use.

Can every nail file be washed?

No. Check the care instructions for that exact file. Do not assume a board can be soaked or disinfected simply because another file can.

What if the product page only says “fine”?

Ask for the missing specification if it affects your choice. That is especially important when you are following a professional service protocol. Avoid guessing from a photo.

The simple buying rule: match the file to your nail type and task, check its stated grit where provided, and use a light touch. A clear product description is more useful than a promise that one file does everything.
