How to use curl gel and scrunch out the cast
Gel can help curls keep their shape, but the stiff feeling while they dry can be confusing. Should you leave it alone, scrunch it out or use less next time?
The short answer: follow your gel's directions, let your hair dry completely, then gently soften any cast. A firm finish during drying is not automatically a sign that you've used too much. Equally, a softer-hold gel may not leave a pronounced cast at all.

What is a curl cast?
A cast is the firmer coating some styling gels leave as they dry around groups of curls. It helps the shape stay in place during drying. Once the hair is fully dry, a gentle scrunch can soften that coating.
The aim isn't to make every curl feel hard. Different formulas offer different finishes, so judge the result by whether you like the shape, movement and feel after drying.
Choose the finish before choosing the gel
- For flexible, medium hold: OLAPLEX No.10 Bond Shaper Curl Defining Gel 200ml is a styling option for waves, curls and coils. Its manufacturer specifically includes releasing the cast as the final application step.
- For lighter hold: L'Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART Flex Curl Bounce 200ml combines a cream and gel texture. L'Oréal describes a light-hold finish with softness and definition, rather than extra crunch.
These are different styling choices, not a ranking. If you like softer movement, you don't need to chase the strongest cast. If your current routine already feels heavy, start by simplifying it before adding another layer.
How to apply OLAPLEX No.10
- After washing, divide clean, wet hair into manageable sections.
- Spread a small quantity evenly through each section. Start conservatively; the label does not give one universal amount for every length and density.
- Cup the ends and lift upwards to encourage your existing curl pattern.
- Allow the hair to air-dry, or use a diffuser, until it is dry throughout.
- Only then gently scrunch any firm cast to soften the finish.
This sequence follows OLAPLEX's directions. Keep the product's own label as your reference if your bottle's instructions differ.
Using Flex Curl Bounce instead?
Follow its dispenser instructions so the cream and gel come out together, mix between your palms and apply to damp hair before styling. Shape the curls with your fingers. Don't automatically copy the wet-hair routine above: application instructions vary between formulas.

Three things to check before changing products
1. Is the hair actually dry?
The outside may feel dry before denser sections underneath. Check those sections before the final scrunch. Breaking a cast while the hair is still damp can disturb the shape you're trying to set.
2. Are you changing too many things together?
For your next wash, keep the shampoo, conditioner and drying method familiar. Try one gel according to its directions and note the amount you used. That gives you a clearer comparison than adding a new cream, oil and gel at once.
3. Does the finish suit what you want?
If the dry result feels too coated, use a little less on the next wash and compare. If it's comfortable but lacks the hold you want, review the product's hold level before repeatedly adding more. A light-hold formula isn't necessarily the wrong product; it may simply be intended for a different finish.
Quick questions
Do I need an oil to scrunch out a cast?
Not necessarily. OLAPLEX's basic No.10 directions finish with gentle scrunching and do not require a separate oil. Try that first before adding another product.
Will gel make straight hair curly?
The products here are described as defining an existing curl pattern. Don't choose them expecting a permanent change to your natural texture.
Is a hard cast proof that the gel is working better?
No. A softer result can be exactly what a lighter-hold formula is designed to give. Look at the finished hair rather than using crunch as the only test.
A useful starting point: choose one gel, follow its wet- or damp-hair instructions, and wait until the hair is fully dry before judging the finish. Small, repeatable changes make it easier to find a routine you enjoy.
