Choosing a haircutting cape for home: fit, coverage and care

by Budget Salon Supplies 03 Nov 2026

A haircutting cape is a small addition to a home haircut kit, but its fit matters more than its colour. You want your clothes covered, a comfortable neckline and a cape you can clean properly afterwards. Buying the longest one you can find will not help if it leaves a gap around your collar.

Here is what to check before choosing a cape for an occasional trim or clipper cut at home, plus how a cutting cape differs from one intended for colouring.

Start with the job: cutting or colouring?

For a basic haircut, look for a cutting cape with an adjustable fastening and enough coverage for the person wearing it. The Wahl Polyester Cape Black is made from 100% polyester with a water-resistant finish, adjustable snaps and a long adult fit.

Water-resistant, waterproof and chemical-resistant are different claims. A water-resistant cutting cape should not automatically be treated as a colour or bleach cape. If colouring is the job, check that the particular cape is intended for it rather than relying on the fabric name alone.

The Salon Smart Tint Me Colouring Cape Black is specified for shampooing, cutting and colouring. It uses waterproof PVC and adjustable press studs. A cape still does not replace the gloves, skin precautions or other instructions supplied with a colour product.

Check the neckline before the overall size

“Adult size” describes the general fit, not a guarantee that every fastening will suit every neck. When comparing capes, check the closure style as well as the length. If the listing does not give a neck range and you need a particularly small or generous fit, ask before buying.

  • Adjustability: the fastening should close comfortably without needing to pull the fabric tight.
  • Coverage while seated: check the shoulders, chest and lap, not just how far the cape hangs when held up.
  • Movement: turning the head should not tug the neckline or pull the cape off a shoulder.

The Salon Smart Tint Me cape is listed at 150 cm long by 135 cm wide. Use a tape measure to picture that over your chair and lap; those measurements describe the cape, not the circumference of its neck opening.

Putting the cape on comfortably

  1. Sit down first so you can arrange the coverage in the position you will actually use.
  2. Place a clean neck strip or a small clean towel at the neckline, then drape the cape evenly.
  3. Fasten it securely but comfortably. Check for an obvious gap at the collar and adjust the closure rather than tightening it excessively.
  4. Make a small head turn each way. If it pulls or feels restrictive, stop and refit it before the haircut starts.

For a child's haircut, choose a suitable fit rather than bunching excess adult fabric around the neck. Stay with the child and remove the cape if they are uncomfortable.

Plan for clean-up, not a completely hair-free floor

A draped cape covers clothing; it is not an enclosed hair collector. Clippings can still fall beside the chair. Choose a spot that is easy to sweep and keep the cape clear of the floor so it does not become a trip hazard.

Before taking it off, gather loose clippings carefully so they are not tipped back onto your shirt. Remove the cape away from your body, then clean it according to its own care label. If someone else is having a haircut next, start with a clean cape and a fresh neck strip or clean towel.

Read the care label before choosing a wash cycle

Do not assume every cape can go through your usual hot wash or tumble-dryer cycle. Coatings and fastenings can have different care requirements. For the Salon Smart Tint Me cape, the supplier specifies a gentle cold machine wash and hang drying. Follow the label on the cape you receive, and let it dry fully before putting it away.

Check the fastening and fabric between uses. A torn cape or a closure that will not stay secure is a reason to replace it, even if it still looks tidy folded up.

Quick questions

Can I use a towel instead?

A clean towel can be a simple fallback for an occasional haircut. A purpose-made cape offers a fastening and broader draped coverage, which may be more convenient when a towel keeps slipping.

Will one cape suit cutting and colouring?

Only if that specific cape is intended for both. Check the product description and care label; a general cutting cape's water resistance is not enough to confirm suitability for colour products.

What should I buy first?

Choose for the task and the wearer: comfortable neck adjustment, enough seated coverage and care instructions you can follow. Browse our aprons and capes to compare options before adding extra accessories.
